How Much of Naruto Can We Really Attribute To Kishimoto?

I was thinking about how well the first arcs of Naruto were, the cleverness and intricacy of the Chunin exam stages, the shinobi system + plethora of jutsus, the various sources of Asian lore, myth and modern works (anime and manga) that make up the NV, and how good the characters were in Part 1 and the Akatsuki part of Part 2.


We know Kishi lost his editor after the Pein arc, and things went downhill with the war arc, but how much of what made Naruto great, was really from Kishimoto in the first place? Thinking about it all, and how Naruto finished, there had to be a man or team behind the curtain who was throwing out all these ideas and keeping the story straight.

Everything after the Pain Arc was straight up Kishimoto's shit.

His first editor left after the Itachi v Sasuke battle, but I'm assuming they thought of the Pain Arc together at least before he left, the Rinnegan/Pain were already being shown (and hinted at) from an earlier arc so that's where I create my assumption.

Regardless the series was never that great after Part 1 anyway, still, Kishimoto isn't that great of a writer based on his many interviews. Like one time he said some stupid shit about needing to change Sasuke for the plot, something stupid on those lines, and he confirmed at Comic Con I believe that Kaguya was a last minute thing.

Dude is a hilarious guy, if it wasn't for his team than this Manga would of been about a guy who works at a ramen shop.

The handling of the 4th ninja war was filled with epic highs and epic fails. I forgot why he parted ways with his editor, but the pacing in the manga was better up until the 5 kage arc. I think this is around the time Kishi knew he was going to have to end the manga in a certain number of chapters, because that war was all over the place.

Dude is a hilarious guy, if it wasn't for his team than this Manga would of been about a guy who works at a ramen shop.

I always got the impression (from the interviews) that Kishi wasn't nearly as serious about the plot as the fandom is. I mean, he wanted to make Hiruzen into a dog at some point and threw jokes into the story where the didn't always seem to fit (like that part with Tenten shortly after Neji's death).

I mean, he probably took it seriously as his work, but I feel he saw his own story in a much more lighthearted tone than we do.

Manga went downhill after the Pain fight IMO. So if it's really true that he lost his editor in the pain arc, it would make sense why it went downhill from there. Kishi did a good job on the series, but he still needs help writing. The ending was a great example of someone who has no idea what he's doing and wants to just get it over with.

Yeah. I think Kishi was just a great artist who had a novel idea, other people ran with it, left him and he tried to carry on by himself. No wonder the manga lost focus. I thought Naruto was about a boy wanting to become Hokage. Not his never ending man-crush pursuit for a guy who never even liked him in the first place. The retcon childhood "friendship" of Naruto and Sasuke (post-Uchiha massacre, when they were 7) should've been our first clue to things going off the rails.
