How much did Gaara improve from part 1?

Gaara didn't seem to improve much from part 2 onwards... He got neg-differ by Deidara who only had a small bag of clay and he was the weakest performing kage vs Madara...

I sometimes wonder if I read the same manga as everyone else.

After Onoki, Gaara was the strongest of the 5 Kage in the war arc. I don't watch or read the bullshit that is Boruto(I barely got through part 2/shippuden, can't torture myself any further) but I'd have to imagine he's still the 2nd strongest kage now after Naruto as well.

Really strong, but he's significantly weaker for someone who stood above the rest (excluding Naruto) in the Chuunin Exams.

By the beginning of part 2 he was able to shield the entirety of sunagakure with sand. By the war he even got mistaken for shukaku which took 4 kages by surprised that was without his bijuu. In the boruto series his sand was showing defensive feats greater than sasukes susanoo armor,and you're seriously asking how much he improved?
