At first I was like "Why not let Trunks just stay in this timeline instead of all this convoluted crap....?" But then I saw Gohan and I was like, "Oh...I get it. There's barely space for him here, making Gohan shine would be even harder if Trunks sticked around."

It did seem kind of pointless for Mirai trunks to leave if he's already gonna be a second trunks in the time he's going back to. But they attempted to explain that away with mai. They REALLY focused on the fact that gohan looks like

It does give me hope as a DBZ fan. Especially with him looking like his mystic form back there.
