1. My first theory is that Koji convinces him to turn to the dark side.

2. Amado convinces him to turn the dark side. Remember, Amado is also an expert in the Karma Seal.

3. Naruto and Sasuke both have a conversation and then Kawakii misunderstands the conversation and goes to either Amado or Koji.

4. Kawakii's situation might be a similar concept to Itachi's where he was forced to betray Kohana in order to protect Kohana.

5. Amado or Koji brainwash Kawakii and have him forget who his friends are.

Remember, all of this is just theory not fact.

I actually thing that things will turn out to be much more complicated. Maybe Kawaki is not even the villain in the future, unless Momoshiki transfers his Karma to Kawaki and some other Otsutsuki brand Boruto and the two become friends. Toneri maybe? Unlikely, because he's not a part of the main branch and they are probably the only ones who can use Karma, but still a possibility since he's the only remaining friendly Otsutsuki. Anyway, if Boruto turns out to be the reason behind Naruto and/or Sasuke's deaths, I'd like Kawaki to stomp him like a bug whatever happens.
