Recently people have been saying that people just jump on the "wank" bandwagon everytime someone shows themself to be powerful or does something epic. They talk like people who do this are just trying to fit in or to be like everyone else. Consider this:
What is wrong with getting excited about someone's success and giving them some well deserved recognition? Don't you think that success is worthy of a little praise? Think about this: If you single handedly solve all of the problems in the global economy, don't you think that you'd deserve at least some news coverage or some kind of award? I think so.
In the same way, powerful and successful characters like Madara deserve the recognition that they get because they have earned it. It is not wank. It is acknowledging someone who demonstrates how to truly get stuff done. Calling it wanking and getting mad at people who give such recognition is like getting mad at a basketball fan for being a fan of Michael Jordan or getting mad at a fan of pop music for being a fan of Michael Jackson.
This is not to say that power is the only thing that you should judge a character by, but in a series about fictional ninjas, power is a key aspect. Therefore it is only fitting to give recognition to those who excel in terms of power.
Some people wonder why people don't give a lot of praise to certain weaker or less successful characters. My answer: Why should someone who has either failed a lot or done absolutely nothing impressive get a lot of praise and recognition? What would they be praised for?
Some people also get mad about people suddenly liking or respecting a character when they obtain power (Kabuto is a prime example of this). My question to these people is this: Why should we really praise someone before they even do anything good or impressive? Do you go around wanking infants? No! It is not until they get older and actually make an impact in the world that they start to get some recognition. Having said that, how is it any different from characters?
Conclusion: Liking a character because of power in a battle manga is totally fine and respectable. If a character in a battle manga is powerful and successful, then that means that they are doing their job correctly. That deserves recognition. Therefore it is not wanking.
