It's not "that" important. Most of everything you get in life doesn't stern from being handsome or having good looks. Like getting accepted in college or getting a good job or being respected in your community. All of those come from the virtue of being a good citizen that knows what he/she wants. I would say it is a key in some areas, but you don't necessarily have to be an angel-face to get your hand on most things.
And there's money that can solve everything nowadays. If you can have money and you don't like your appearance so much - the Kardashians have taught us how to do it.
Basically, you just need to take good care of yourself. The little things like drinking and not eating healthy can destroy your appearance more than you might think. Ugliness is a judgment of the beholder. If you take very good care of yourself and, by all means, wear clean decent clothes - it can't be that bad. My grade 5 English teacher didn't have the looks - but she made an effort and I'm sure all the kids could look at her and not think up good insults.
Plus business wise, you just have to wear a good suit or a good dress to make a good impression - and manners work towards polishing the impression - bonus if you have good communication skills and are a people's person - double bonus if you can throw in a few jokes.
