How Hashirama died

I was reading the last chapter and its seems almost impossible that someone could kill this guy, i mean come on if Madara couldn't, who could? Hashirama and Madara were friends and we know that Madara looses this fight but survives and gets some of Hashirama's DNA somehow and then unlocks the Rinnegan later in life. That must be it, just like Nagato unlocked his Rinnegan when he saw his parents die I bet that after Madara killed Hashirama (his best friend and secret lover ) It made him finally unlock the Rinnegan. That is the only way i can possibly see it happening because Madara is the only one close to Hashirama's power and this also explains how exactly he got his Rinnegan upgrade.

Nagato didn't awaken the Rinnegan itself, but he awakened its' full powers when Madara gave it to him.

Madara plucked his eyes which were in Rinnegan form and transplanted them to nagato. This explains why nagato can't revert his eyes back to normal like the sharingan
