Its high difficulty since Madara was able to destroy all the statue's arms and make it useless combatwise and pushed Hashirama to exhaustion. Though once Shinsuusenju came out and did its business all chance of Madara's victory went down the drain.

He didn't destroy it all since Shinsusenju still managed to disable Kurama, even after withstanding that barrage of attacks.

I am not a fan nor hater or Madara or Hashirama, but OP is right. Hashirama beat Madara around mid difficulty even when he had Kyuubi. It was kind of pathetic, not on Madara, but of the writer. It was MEANT to be an extremely even encounter between the two top shinobis, but the way it delivered looked completely one sided. Hashirama had an answer for literally everything Madara did and I don't think Madara landed a single blow on Hashirama once.
