How good do you think young Base Orochimaru was?

I'm talking right before he left Konoha and got all the forbidden jutsus, poisons, curse seals, new bodies, and crap. Right around when him, J-man, and Tsunade fought Hanzo. He was hailed as a genius and was taught under Hiruzen the third Hokage alongside the 1st Hokage's granddaughter and J-Man so he must have already been extremely special.

Do you think he was considered Kakashi/Gai level at the same age? Or maybe better?

Probably better than they were tbh. Hiruzen stated that he was a genius that only appeared once in a generation. I don't remember ever seeing anyone say something like that about Kakashi or Gai, although they were of course, really strong

I believe he was stonger than you think because imagine all the jutsu he knew that he was keeping secret it wasn't until years after that hirrizen found out he was evil.

Saying he's strong because he was a 'genius' doesn't really work. Neji was also called a genius, but he got fodderized by some toothpicks.

But yeah, prolly really strong. I'm pretty sure he was the strongest one on Team Hiruzen.

If only we knew Jiraiya or Tsunade's power during that time. Well, ok here's what I'm thinking: It took Young Oro, Young J, and Young Tsussy to match Hanzo. Mifune beat Edo Hanzo. Maybe Mifune could solo them all, even though that's most likely impossible because of his weakness against ninjutsu, and especially will be destroyed quickly to Tsussy's immense taijutsu

Not me, he was the only real villain in Naruto and made the role of the antagonist cool and interesting.. Now everything is recycled, nonsensible gaga.

I don't recall guy ever being called a genius, Kakashi called lee a taijutsu genius for being able to open so many gates at such a young age..

and genus that comes once every decade > genius apparently , though some of these statements aren't to be taken literally..

There are geniuses then geniuses like Orochimaru and Sasuke. Genius is a general term and some geniuses stand out... Like Orochimaru who Hiruzen said is a genius that appears once in a lifetime. And guys like Sasuke whom Darui after seeing him manipulate the amaterasu flames in conjunction with susano said "geniuses like him don't appear very often".

Its like saying "that guy is a genius!" about your friend who gets a lot of As at school. Einstein was also a genius. Does that mean your friend is like Einstein? absolutely not. Gotta understand there are different degrees to the term.
