How exactly did Madara not die...?

What Madara is implying is that Hashirama didn't check if Madara was dead and just walked away? Does that not sound wierd in any way? Who doesn't check if their enemy is dead...?

What I'm thinking is there is another detail being left out. Thoughts?

Maybe he let him live. Felt sorry for him and maybe they both knew Madara could never beat Hashi. So there would be no point for another battle.

that would explain why he didn't attack even after hashi died.

From what I know, fighting with someone multiple times with intent to kill isn't being friends at all. Tobi, as Madara, has stated that he despised Hashirama so it's likely that they (or Madara) never really liked each other.

If he left him to live, why would he go tell his village that he killed Madara? I'm sure he didn't just come back and lie to his village telling them that he killed Madara.
