how does the rank system work?

i am new and i have seen that people are sannins, kages, chunnin, genin, etc. how does that work because i dont have anything. can u jsut pick one or is there a system behind it like you have to level up? and if you have to lvl up what are the factors that make you lvl up

it all depends on the number of posts you have. I am not sure about the exact numbers since my post count record is one of the lowest in nb only 2.3 posts per day.
