How does reincarnation work in Naruto?

So both Madara and Hashirama died,with Indra and Ashura reincarnating in Naruto and Sasuke.

But how would ET Madara and Hashirama have the same personalities with their ancient spirits removed if they were indirectly controlled by the feudal brothers' wills?

Because its not really like reincarnation the chakra of each are passed down well that's what I believe I don't think they are literally possessed

It's implied that Indra's and Ashura's chakra transmigrated to only those that shared their specific characteristics, so the personalities weren't a direct result of Hashirama and Madara possessing the chakra, but were a requirement for it. As to how these personality traits were ascertained by said chakra entities, I couldn't say.

No change really, the spirits seemed to send their chakra to those who resembled their goals/mindsets of love/cooperation (ashura) or might/power (indra)

They only share a few traits but essentially they have their own unique personality like their DNA. Naruto was goofy but cocky, Hashirama had an inferiority complex but was gentle, the only thing they had in common was their tendency for high ambitions.

The transmigrants transfer their chakra to descendants with the same mindset as theirs, Ashura's is a strong will, Indra's is a strong desire.
