[Discussion] How does one motivate a child?

I speak to his teachers on a regular basis and I've got his parents making sure he reads and does homework at home. I will try to do homework with him but I only get one hour per week to work after school with him which I'd rather use to motivate him.

Ok. Let me ask a couple questions
First: How does he view u? (Friend, mentor, brother, guy that the school assigned to him. Etc)

Second: what is your main goal in helping him? (Improved grades, more sociable, better outlook, etc.) you apparently have a time limit so u need to know what exactly u want to accomplish.

He views me as a mentor I guess. Perhaps as a strong(er) male role model which he does not have at home.
The goal is to improve his grades and work ethic (going hand in hand). Anything else is a bonus.

The time limit would be between now and around July 2016 I guess (unless the university I get accepted into allows me a gap year, then it'd be the year after that).

Well, he'd need to pass the trials next year to be on the team.

He said he likes maths but he hates his teacher.

Can you involve him in some soccer team where he doesn't need to pass the trials and stuff?

Then, ideal would be that you try practicing math with him. Use gaming and rewards. If he sees that he is making progress in the classroom among other students he would definitively be more motivated than he is now and he will start doing things on his own. First steps are the hardest and therefore they should be the slowest with a lot of patience.

The best fix would be to have help establish pride in his work
In order to do that u have to show him what he is capable of.

Mmm Idk man, I'm only a student in a higher year. Sure being one of the star players for my year could give me a say but I doubt it.
I've been doing a lot of maths with him after finding out it's his best subject. I've also asked his teachers to sit him next to the high achievers in his class.
