I was thinking about applying to colleges. So how does a young individual adjust to the next step in life.

Should one do things alone or seek help/assistance from services offered?

How are you adjusting? What helps you best?

Follow the wise words of itachi and don't try to do things all by yourself.

Get as much help as you can. Just because you dont need em, doesnt mean you shouldnt. Utilize everything you can.

Also alcohol. Lol all joking aside though.

Go only mon - thurs. Dont take any classes before 10.

Thrus night and friday are your free days. Saturday is your hangover day. Sunday is your catch up day.

Dont be peer pressured to things. Put your foot down and decline and theyll respect you for it. Better to puke than keeping alcohol down (dont miss the toilet).

Grades are important but connectiond are even more important than that. Remember that. Grades only tell you whether you are credible/capable as a stranger however people will always pick people they know over strangers.

Always engage to study sesh. Its a great way to break the ice and study which can turn into hanging out then to partying and eventually a one night mistake.

Always aim for that dean's list. And freakin volunteer!

Most of all, if you feel like your grades arent going to make it, bail. Quit and become a shut in. Get those grades up! Remember, graduate to a prestige university (doesnt matter which university you first take, as long as you graduate into a popular prestigious university)

To college? You have freedom, but it's mostly an illusion. You either go to class or you don't. Personally I hated going to class, but it was a waste of money not to.
In regards to majors, don't major in something you love. Chances are good there's no money in what makes you happy. Pick something you can tolerate doing everyday for a job. Hobbies and family fill the gap beyond that.
Parties are fun. A lot of life is not about what you know, but who you know. Try to make friends. All kinds of friends. You'll never know when you might need their help.
Relationships. Not really worth it. You'll have more fun single. But go ahead and be one of those people that get's married while in school if that's what you want.
Overall, remember that college is expensive and most of your classmates will be immature and fairly stupid. College does have ways of weeding out people who don't belong, so don't worry too much

Combination of these two answers should do the trick. From my experience it'll differ from person to person.

The first two years aren't THAT much different than high school. Always go to class, get any help you need, and study. You need to learn how to study propely, and then apply that to the next 2 to 4 or even 6 years that you're in there. Also you need to apply for government assistance if you're in the US. If you can't get any pell grants, apply for a lot of scholarships.

I was thinking about applying to colleges. So how does a young individual adjust to the next step in life.

My recommendation is a trade school, first. Spend a couple years working in a trade. Gain a couple years of experience fixing problems and gaining some experience under your belt.

Then go to college.

That may sound contradictory to some of the advice you are going to get - but I've seen far too many people end up with silly degrees they never even use, or spend countless years floating around in colleges that encourage them to avoid poor hiring statistics in their chosen field by applying for more loans, getting Masters' degrees, or picking up a second major.

There's nothing wrong with additional education and certification... unless you're going into serious debt with little work experience.

Should one do things alone or seek help/assistance from services offered?

A little of both. Colleges may pretend to take you by the hand and walk you through things all friendly-like... but you'll have to take initiative to really track down what is good.

How are you adjusting? What helps you best?

I had a lot of nerdy friends and we played laser tag in the cafeteria.

That was back in community college, though.

Still, it was fun. We had debates, the pro-communist guy liked to call me a neanderthal. I talked about actual dragons... hang on...

nah... can't find the video on Youtube. It's been years since it showed up on public search for some reason, you have to know exactly what to put in the search field.

An old friend of ours was into making videos and just pieced it together for shits and grins way, way back in 2006-ish.
