I was thinking about applying to colleges. So how does a young individual adjust to the next step in life.
My recommendation is a trade school, first. Spend a couple years working in a trade. Gain a couple years of experience fixing problems and gaining some experience under your belt.
Then go to college.
That may sound contradictory to some of the advice you are going to get - but I've seen far too many people end up with silly degrees they never even use, or spend countless years floating around in colleges that encourage them to avoid poor hiring statistics in their chosen field by applying for more loans, getting Masters' degrees, or picking up a second major.
There's nothing wrong with additional education and certification... unless you're going into serious debt with little work experience.
Should one do things alone or seek help/assistance from services offered?
A little of both. Colleges may pretend to take you by the hand and walk you through things all friendly-like... but you'll have to take initiative to really track down what is good.
How are you adjusting? What helps you best?
I had a lot of nerdy friends and we played laser tag in the cafeteria.
That was back in community college, though.
Still, it was fun. We had debates, the pro-communist guy liked to call me a neanderthal. I talked about actual dragons... hang on...
nah... can't find the video on Youtube. It's been years since it showed up on public search for some reason, you have to know exactly what to put in the search field.
An old friend of ours was into making videos and just pieced it together for shits and grins way, way back in 2006-ish.
