How does Gaara's sand do against water?

It's a fairly common weakness in anime, film, manga etc etc that sand < water.

Is Gaara's sand the same? Because if so it's odd how nobody would have exploited such a weakness...
Not that water should get through his sand shell but it should certainly slow the sands movements down a lot or make him have to use a lot more chakra to move it.

The days since it was an "ultimate defense" are long gone but still someone should have tried water techniques on it, it's not like Gaara himself is all that strong or fast.

Watch the battle of Garra vs 2nd Mizukage and you will see how sand does against water. :)

I think it depends on which sand he uses.

one question, when did his ultimate defense go away? lol

second, water will make his sand heavier but wont make it useless, Oil (like the 2nd Mizukage) is probably Gaara's Sands true weakness

I think that it would be useless. It would just clump together and weight it down. I don't believe he could control it.

not once has it been shown in the manga that Gaara's sand is weak against water. What you are all thinking of is oil.OIL. In the fight against Madara, he had no problem controlling it even after the sand was inside Mei's water dragon tech.

I mean it's not the ultimate defense anymore since people can get through it pretty easily now.

Yeah I never counted 2nd Mizukage fight since it's oil I just figured that in the past people could have used water jutsu to disable his shield and then assassinate him, it's a fairly obvious solution.
But if it was never done then maybe that's because water does nothing to it.

i have only seen Rock lee and Sasuke (barely and for dumb reason) and Deidera (because he mixed his bombs in his sand) break through the defense.. no one else lol

its still Ultimate as ever

Most people seem to believe that water would hinder Gaara's ability to manipulate sand (to what extent I'm not sure), and I agree with that. However, I don't see the water preventing Gaara from utilizing his sand at all. That's another popular view on the matter, albeit an extreme one.

Kisame is definitely one of the better counters to Gaara's style.
