How Does Edo Tensei really work...

hey everyone,

I was just thinking about this today while reading up on Shisui Uchiha.

How does Edo Tensei really work? Are the souls of the dead pulled from a mysterious pool and then revived if their body is still on the Earth? Does the user have to know the location of the bodies? have them in their possession?

The reason I ask is because we know that Shisui wasn't brought back because his body was disposed of and not on the Earth anymore. Jiraiya was not brought back because his body would have been crushed by water pressure ( I think ) or his body was too far for the jutsu to reach SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

I would like to hear everyones theories because I'm confused as to how it works and what its limits are :/

I think a new body is made,shisui wasn't important and jiraya was lost, you need a piece of the original body to make an edo

Shisui was actually one of the ones Kabuto wanted to revive ( according to the naruto wiki) and I was wondering why Kisame wasn't revived as well

To use Edo Tensei you simply need the jutsu and DNA of the guy you want to resurrect. Jiraiya couldn't be resurrecred because it was impossible to gather DNA from him( his body somewhere at the bottom of the sea). The body for the resurrected guy is actually the body of a sacrifice. The sacrifice's appearance has been altered by paper-thingies.

Basically, in order to revive someone, you need their DNA. Edo tensei is a summoning technique, and when you use the DNA of a person to summon them, their soul is injected into the vessel that you have prepared. The summoner does not need to know where the soul of the person is, all they need is DNA.
