Well long hair in manga usually looks better due to the whole 'defy gravity' thingy. That and his short hair is just atrocious.

Short hair simply since it would be too hard to distingush who was who when he and Madara stood next to each other. It wouldn't be hard for me, but you have people who don't read for comprehension and would go "wait there are two Madara uchias?"
