I could see him removing it and donning the Hokage hat, since it's foreshadowing he'll be the 6th Hokage before Naruto takes over as the 7th.

I picture him standing in front of Team 7 (Sai included), and telling them how proud he is, then we see them looking surprised and the next panel shows him handing Naruto a black cloth. Then we see his full face, and he's smiling as he places the hat on his head.

I fully agree it should remain a mystery, and if they are going to reveal it now I think it would be hard for them to come up with something that live up to peoples expectation, most likely I think it will be a disappointment.
