Back in the day I was actually hoping for an explanation before his death, but no, we never got a full one.
He probably stole a kinjutsu from Iwagakure or something and was able to use it most likely due to a KG.

For some reason I can't reply :/ so I'll just answer here.
-Nothing happened to Deidara's left eye, he just covers it with some kind lens-thingy in order to counter the sharingan. That way, even if he's caught in a genjutsu, his left eye will still be able to see beyond the genjutsu.
-I believe Deidara was part of the explosion corps, and when he stole the kinjutsu from Iwa, he was able to put his "explosive chakra" inside his "art".
