I was always a skeptic of Derp's theory and he obviously could never prove for certain he was right. Even now, it is hard to 100% discount his theory unless we were told "The sage was not of any clan we know today", even though this chapter did say that in a nutshell.
Either way, the theory was far more far-fetched than most people gave it credit for and honestly did not make a lot of sense based on the manga up to that point. Nothing wrong with making a thought-provoking theory, but I felt he was far too stubborn with his theory and far too many people jumped on his bandwagon.
