It's call learning the hand signs, Kakashi used earth jutsus without the Sharingan. Kakashi have lightning, earth, and water elements but only shown to have copied water jutsus so far. His earth wall had his dog summons when he used it on Deva Pein and that's not just copied. He used earth jutsus on Sasuke in part 1 before he ever shown the Sharingan.
