How did people live before chakra?

In the NV, if someone uses up all their chakra, it is supposed to kill them. So, how did people survive before the Sage's mother have everyone chakra?

A ninja doesn't need a Bijuu to survive, but once he becomes a jinchuriki, he dies if he loses it.

Am guessing but i think its like this, rikudou created d ninja world, nd taught people how to manipulate chakra so back then there was no ninja till rikudou came, xo am guessing that at some point rikudou or his mum gave people chakra and since the people where normal till when given chakra, when the chakra mixed with their body or kinda fused with them wit a point error, i think the chakra became part of them and became their main life source or live force so when their chakra was either absorbed or taken away they died
