Back when he was evil, multiple times during the battle he implies that he pities him to a degree and wants nothing more than to take him into the infinite tsukuyomi, to "fulfill" his dreams, and asks him to stop fighting multiple times. All in all, it seemed he never really felt much malice for Naruto, and wanted to help him in some twisted way.

He felt an emotional need to downplay Naruto, even calling Naruto a tool. Naruto reminded him of his past self which he didn't accept.

Did Kakashi and Obito not explain this already? Obito saw himself within Naruto and basically kept testing Naruto so that he can realize the world as he sees it now as opposed how he used to see it like Naruto does now. He wanted Naruto to come to IT as well since he felt that eventually, Naruto would change just the way Obito did.

As soon as that mask came off, he was practically begging to be saved. He saw himself in Naruto, the old unbroken Obito.

So, what you're saying is, he wanted 1. to downplay his childhood beliefs and confirm his own and 2. allow Naruto to keep his innocence instead of falling as he had? Interesting.

I think he was mad, he saw himself in Naruto and even with everything Naruto had been through he still fought and did give into the darkness like Obito.

Almost. For 2, he wanted to see Naruto fall just as he did. He kept pushing him and antagonizing him with a lot of shit talking to see if he would fall the same way Obito did when he saw Rin die. It's partly why Naruto kept telling Obito to shut up Lol

Pretty much, remember Obito didnt believe he was doing wrong, he thought about saving everyone from this Hell of a world. When he saw naruto he saw his old self and it ust pissed him off to a degree, he was so bothered that someone like him hasn't seen the world for what it truly is. So when he killed neji he invited him, because he finally thought he understood how pointless this world is. Think of it as like an Anti Talk no jutsu. Obito thought he was helping everyone by giving them all they could ever ask for, all he wants is for him and everyone in the world to live a simple happy life.
