How did Madara survived the battle with Hashirama at valley of end?

Did he used genjutsu to make hashirama thinks he was dead? That's what I'm thinking. I think his only purpose was to get hashirama's cells during that battle and then just pretended to die at the end.

I re-read it and it says that Hashirama was sure madara was dead, and that he actually wanted to kill madara in the end and said "it doesn't matter if you're my sibling, family, or best friend...I will eliminate anyone who threatens the village" so I guess he was actually serious.

Yeh, true...it's just a bit disappointing that Madara had to "steal" Hashi's cells to be more powerful. I'd rather have him be naturally powerful as he was in his prime with the EMS...and rivaled with hashi.
