How did Madara and Izuna got the mangekyo sharingan ?

It got me thinking about another subject, how did Madara and Izuna got the mangekyo sharingan, if I´m not mistaken they were the first Uchiha to unlock it.
I was wondering, to unlock the MS you need to has it says on the Naruto wiki -

The Mangekyō Sharingan is awakened through the trauma experienced from the death of a person very close to the Sharingan user.

So what do you think happened to Madara and Izuna so that they unlocked it ?

They didnt have to kill their best friends, they could have just seen them die. That would have triggered it.

For the first link, in the middle panel towards the lower half of the page, there is blood splatter, meaning that they did kill people in order to attain their MS. However, who they killed is not shown in the manga.

Still speculation. It's never stated how they unlocked it.

mmmmm interesting but Kishi is known to deceive the readers... I think there´s more to it.
