How did kakashi and guy become so strong?

How are they able to defend them selves against the jinchuriki's? I mean kakashi couldn't take down the deva path and Guy had to go to
The 7th gate just to kill kisame. How did they get so strong in such a small amount of time?

Also, most Jinchuriki were not nearly as powerful as Pain (remember that seven were captured by the Akatsuki, of which Pain was one of the strongest memebers of) and Kisame was held on the same level as a tailed beast, not just the Jinchuriki.
