I thought he needed eye contact for most genjutsu?

If not, this is either just a dumb plot device or super OP. Guy doesn't even need eye contact now? If he just uses it, potentially solos most people. It's ridiculous.

Personally, I chalk it up to plot.

Sorry I can't remember every detail of that moment, but in the page you give he's clearly looking right at him. If no eye contact was had before this than being a master of genjutsu he could have likely used another type to temporarily bind Orochimaru until he could face him and use the sharingan. Also Itachi likely never trusted Orochimaru since he was keeping tabs on Akatsuki and being from the same village would have known of Orochimaru's evil past.

well its not really faaar beyond. because other ninjas can also cast genjutsu without sharingan/eye contact. unless you think non-eye genjutsu is far beyond a sharingan genjutsu.

Besides i am not sure why you are surprised. Its been above roughly 300 chapters ago that itachi told us that he doesn't need his sharingan to cast genjutsu.

Likewise its been roughly 5 years or more that the 3rd DB stats were published and in that itachi gained a 5 in this field.

Little alarming that at this stage in the manga questions are being asked about this

never saw this page of databook. but it says here that it requires eye to eye contact. so it wasn't a finger genjutsu then.

Orochimaru himself spoke about "great eye power" after being caught in Itachi's genjutsu. Obviously, it implies this genjutsu is a power granted by Itachi's eyes.
