How did Itachi know that Tobi (Obito/Madara) was behind the fox attack of the village 16 years prior to the start of the series.

My question is, If Itachi knew that Tobi was behind the fox attack before the massacre, why didn't he tell the Konoha elders in order to avoid the massacre and help persuade the Uchiha from not carrying out the coup. Hell, Itachi even let Tobi join in when he had to slaughter his clan.

So after Itachi joined akatsuki, Tobi told Itachi that he was the reason the Uchiha was shunned by Konoha and he was effectively the reason Itachi had to carry out the massacre. Then when Itachi tells Sasuke of this, Tobi has to lie to Sasuke and say that it was a natural disaster. WTF.

I think its quite a worthy thing to bring up considering its a major event in the Naruto series. Kishi should account for it because its his series.

My guess is that Itachi pieced it together on his own. He might not have figured it out until after he defected. But to answer your question, its plot bro.
