How did Iruka become chuunin?

He's not particularly smart. He's weaker than a lot of genin(naruto, neji, sasuke, lee, gaara, kankuro, temari, shikamaru as genin all woulda smashed him, Konohamaru currently can smash him). He has shown no elemental affinity or special abilities or traits. His leadership isn't all that good. What made him a chuunin?

when you think about it you have to also wonder how all the other fooder chunnin through jonin get their ranks for the simple fact that most of them can be k.oed by konohamaru

Don't you have to either win the tournament to become a chuunin or perform exceptionally well like Shikamaru did? And there's a lot of other villages involved, not just konoha. There is no way Iruka could have even made it past the Forest of Death let alone the qualifiers! And there's no way he did something awesome outside of the exams because he sucks at fighting and isn't that smart nor has special talent.

Iruka's all powerful battle tools involve 1) throw kunai. 2) try to stab with kunai.

Even Tenten can beat him.

Well there's a few things I can comment about it..

- Perhaps we haven't seen Iruka's full potential
- It's a team effort. So it's not likely he solo'd the 2nd test or anything
- The Third test isn't supposed to have preliminaries. Meaning once Iruka passed the 2nd test all he needed to do was impress the judges to become a Chunin
- Naruto's generation is actually quite powerful. It's been commented on loads of times

Your just making assumptions.Lack of appearance does not correlate to lack of skill or strength.There are eight categories for ninja to be analyzed.
The system gives out points between 1 and 5.
Strength - stamina -Tai -Nin-Gen-Handseals-intelligence-speed.
1 being genin 2 being chuunin 3 being jonin 4 top tier jonin 5 mastery
the majority of your skills must match your next rank to advance
so 5 out of 8 of the above gets you promoted so to be chuunin 5 out 8 of his skills have to be a 2 for him to be a chuunin.Chuunin are also the main force if nina jonin means elite ninja not every ninja from the villages are elite that is impossible and absurd.Kishi does not delve into and probably never is going to
flash back to the time where Iruka became a chuunin.It does not serve to move the story along.At any given time Iruka could of beat any of the konoha 11 before the chuunin exams.Neji sasuke,naruto are an exception to the case.Iruka could probably go head to head with the rest of the konoha squad since they are all still chuunin level.

Because of the 9 tails attack and it took out most of the ninja and they needed more ninja so he became one and they needed chunin to do missions and then he became a teacher.
