Most likely it's wasn't one. Remember how the Third Raikage died? hmm

He could have had a disease and died in the war.
Or used a seal/sacraficing jutsu to protect his teammates and died.
Or he died vs like loads of high lvl enemies.
Combinations of this all could be the case too.

All kinds of special jutsu users exist.
Take Hidan for example. Without info before hand for the opponent, he could oneshot the strongest of foes ones the curse is active.
Or someone like Deidara with C4.
Hashirama could probably sense C4 though, but still, imagine a huge group of unique high lvl ninjas vs Hashirama, especially if he needs to protect people. could maybe take him out.

Actually I can see Hashirama being killed by a child of the enemy simply because he's so trusting and that was most likely his downfall......

Well it seems he wasn't suffering from any kind of advanced aging so the Tsunade style idea wouldn't work. His Edo tensai would have shown his weakness.

Honestly any guy that could kill or match Hashirama would have been very famous the fact that he isn't tells you that Kishi might be retconing this shit.

After seeing Hashi's feats it just sounds dumb to say that he died facing fodders. And lets face it everyone is a fodder compared to Madara.

Then again maybe he got ambushed and caught by surprise, much like the fourth Kazekage.
