This is one of the biggest questions i have regarding the entire Narutoverse.
So we know that Hashirama probalby is one of the strongest shinobi to ever live, Top three (Hagoromo, Madara, Hashirama). That also means that killing Hashirama is close to impossible, the strongest shinobi next to him (madara) tried and failed... Or did he?

Hashirama died in his 50s during the shinobi war of the time, so did his brother Tobirama. I REFUSE to believe that he was killed in the battlefield by anyone except Madara. No one even came close Hashiramas power except Madara. So this is what i think happened. Madara actually won the first battle... Let me explain, he won in the sense that he achievd his goal, the goal was never to win the fight with Hashirama, but to collect his DNA and pretend to be dead, so he could infuse his cells with his own and become the ultimate shinobi. So what i'm saying is that there is another fight between Hasirama and Madara that we havent seen yet, where Madara actually kills Hashirama. Or Hashirama sacrifices himself to save thousands of leaf shinobi or something like that. Lets say Madara brings down three meteors and Hasirama saves everyone but dies himself. Or something of that nature. What do you guys think?
I cant see any other possible way of Hashirama dying in a war? If they said he dies of natural causes i could belive that, but in a war?? He is just to powerfull, no one except Madara could kill him.

No. Otherwise hashirama would have said that madara killed him. Tobirama would have known as well.

I think he was killed by a fungus or weedicide

His will of fire was so big, he got burned.

That´s the only possibility.

na we would've known about that by now, to me that fight would seem more important to the first fight. I think he died by using his regeneration abilities to often, i think it was stated that the more tsunade uses it it shortens her life span, and hashis was on a whole other level.

Well after he made Konoha, war wasn't as prominent so they didn't need to fight as much... so he got weaker and eventually died in a war he wasn't ready for

lol you dont just get weak like that after fighting your whole life. sure you may get a little weaker but not weak enough to die by fodders, hashi was on a whole other level, even if he stopped fighting for 10 yrs he would solo anyone.

Agree, Hiruzen was 70 years old when he died, and we all saw how awesome he was even at old age.

well he couldn't have died of old age cause that doesn't work sense him and tobirama were pretty close in age and tobirama died kinda young and we can assume hashirama died before him or making hiruzen hokage in the middle of that battlefield wouldn't have been needed sense a hokage could have been appointed by hashirama upon their return to konoha.

so maybe he got the itachi-kimmimaru illness that just kills off OP characters for the sake of plot
