It could inspire someone to lift weights or take up karate. Most of the characters are static and one-dimensional, but one could argue that Vegeta is dynamic enough to inspire someone to change their life for the better. He was selfish and egotistical, but sacrificed himself for his family, friends, and world.

Why DragonBall Z Is So Amazing

by Anthony Dream Johnson in INDEPENDENT THINKING

I’m quite sure there is discussion elsewhere of more depth than what I am about to go into, largely thanks to James Steele and his find of Anime and Philosophy (which I have not yet read). Never the less, I have my own ideas about why the anime series Dragonball Z is so incredible, so amazing, and so inspiring to many of us.

My ideas can be reduced to two fundamental points about the series.

1. The series in it’s entirety is a relentless display, depiction, and expression of the hero in man’s soul. Time and again, virtually every character of significance in the series goes through the greatest of trials, pushes past his pre-conceived limits, and reaches ever greater depths of his own potential.

The characters consistently face odds that at face value, appear insane to even consider fighting against. Yet, throughout the entire series, the fighters choose, when no other options are presented to them, life in the face of death.

They choose to fight to the death, if necessary, for their values — for their lives, the lives of their loved ones, and for their happiness.

And while they often experience heavy losses in temporary defeat, the death of their friends, and so on — a hero of heroes always arises and succeeds where the rest have tried, and failed.

That hero of heroes succeeds in the face of every odd and challenge conceivable — he finds a way where none was thought possible.

While saving entire planets from the brink of physical, instantaneous destruction is typically not on the “to do list” of our daily lives, and neither is fighting off a single entity more powerful than the chains of reality suggested possible, the challenges the fighters face are not disproportionate to the challenges we face in our own lives in correspondingly high pressure circumstances and environments (high intensity training is especially relevant here).

The characters and the events they take part in are actually quite relevant to our own lives, if only a depiction of such obstacles in a certain and specific style — a style that strips down and reveals the best in every man.

The ideal in and possible to man — every man.

And in a world, society, and bankrupt culture that tell us “No, it is not possible”, Dragonball Z tells us “Yes, it is possible“, with a literal, glowing radiance attributed to it.

This is so exceedingly rare in today’s art — and our world in it’s sum entirety — that when we see it, its value is so overwhelmingly obvious it exceeds the ability of most to describe — if and only if a man holds his life as his highest value and the achievement of his own happiness as his highest purpose.

Men who do not — who deny life as an achievement and instead seek to avoid death — see little or no value in the series and the subsequent characters.

They feel nothing for the characters, often mock the series, and at best, enjoy “the story” — ignoring the characters that the story is designed to embrace, challenge, and actualize the best in.

The story being a vehicle and means for the end — the characters.

2. The second primary, fundamental point I hold for the series attraction and achievement is the successful, vivid depiction of the ideal man, by the creators best judgments.

The lead character is Goku. While there are some points lacking, and some other points patently wrong about the depiction, Goku is still pretty damn good, and I think by leaps and bounds, the best my generation has yet to produce and witness in art.

Which is his particular draw as a character, and subsequently, for Dragonball Z itself. Draw because this is so exceedingly rare in today’s culture that it is almost non-existent — and we hunger for it.

We hunger for a man to be portrayed as he could, should, and ought to be — his best and highest self, and continually striving higher and higher, beyond what he and others thought was possible in reality.

What’s more, while there is humor about and for Goku, mockery for and of him is virtually non-existent in the series. Compare that to today’s super heroes and you have quite the contrast. In fact you have the building up and tearing down of the ideal man in today’s art.

DragonBall Z is a series to be celebrated, as is its main character, Son Goku. You should take no shame in enjoying the series, and even finding concrete inspiration in it, fictional as it may be.

Those who attack it, specifically for its heroism, are the greatest of cowards, who hold man in concept as a mindless, soulless slug, and not a heroic being — which is to say, and is a confession of how they face existence, and view themselves, first and foremost.

it inspired me to do ALL of that because of said same reasons. DBZ isn't for everyone. By everyone, I mean people who lasck perserverance. You might as well say that Naruto isn't that great either OP

Goku is the most inspirational character ever. Always walking down the right path, always doing everything for the right reasons. He is very close to my heart.

Dbz is just a poor adaptation of the awesomeness that is the dragon ball manga.

It's a captivating story about an orphan finding his place in the world and living to protect it. Goku is the most inspirational fictional character ever drawn.

The fact that it was the first manga to gain widespread international audience is no surprise. Every other manga that came after it, was inspired by it.

When you think DB, don't think of the awful animation and the 3 minute screams [Dbz anime]. Think manga. Think dragonball. Think Goku :)

Akira Toriyama and his work in the Dragon Ball series has influence in several other manga work. Similar works use an identical kind of "inner power", and that "inner power" made the characters grow stronger.

- Ring ni Kakero (Shonen Jump,77) authored by Masami Kurumada. Many concepts from this series are similar to Dragon Ball, such as tournament fighting, exciting fighting styles, and chi power.

- Masashi Kishimoto states in a message in his manga, Naruto, that he was influenced by Toriyama. In Naruto, the concept similar to ki is called chakra level; the trademark technique being the Rasengan, which requires a high level of chakra control.

- In the manga Saint Seiya, authored by Masami Kurumada, the protagonist Seiya is the titular character of the namesake show. He is one of the 88 saints of Athena, and serves loyally at her side. Seiya dons the bronze cloth (an armor that denotes sainthood) of Pegasus, and draws power ("cosmos") from the constellation that connects to it. The saints can grow stronger if they raise higher levels of "cosmos".

- Bleach is a manga and anime series by Tite Kubo. All Bleach characters are "souls". Living humans contain souls within their bodies. Disembodied souls, or spirits, have a form composed of particles of spiritual energy called "Reiatsu" (霊圧, Spiritual Pressure), Certain unique humans naturally have both the power to sense and the strength to fight with spirits. Ordinary humans can gain the ability to interact with spirits by spending time around a large source of spirit energy. Ichigo Kurosaki is the exact example, and considered to be one of the strongest characters.

- YuYu Hakusho is a manga and anime series by Yoshihiro Togashi. Yu Yu Hakusho characters are either human or yokai (demon), and have spiritual powers called reiki (for humans) and yoki (for demons). There is also a system of yoki class or equivalent-to-yoki class that ranges from E-S+, E being the weakest and S class being the strongest level of yokai. Yokai that are soldiers of one of the three of demon kings, Yomi have devices similar to scouters that let them read an enemy's power level.

- Shaman King is a manga and anime series by Hiroyuki Takei. The Shaman King characters are shamans or mediums that use a spiritual energy called Furyoku to materialize their spirit guardians. This process is known as Over Soul, and the inner power is measured by an arm device whose function is similar to a Scouter.

- One Piece is a manga and anime series by Eiichiro Oda. Dōriki (道力, literally meaning "Power") is a measurement of the power of one's Rokushiki abilities among the CP9 (Cipher Pol Number 9). It is measured in a similar way to Dragon Ball's power level but in the form of hitting a member of CP9 (Fukurou) who will then after being hit follow on to tell one his Douriki. However, this measurement of power was short-lived and was only ever shown to measure the power of the CP9 members and a single marine.

- Ghost Sweeper Mikami is a manga and anime series by Takashi Shiina. A type of spiritual energy labelled as reiki is common among all the characters in the series. It is measured in a fashion similar to the scouters in Dragon Ball, but in more relation to this manga it is gauged with a ring-shaped measuring device which enlarges from its original ring size, surrounds the target and temporarily drains them of their spiritual energy. The end result is a rating defined as "might" which can alternatively be seen as a power level.

- Claymore, created by Norihiro Yagi, possesses the concept of yoki, which all of the eponymous Claymores (an army of female warriors working for the mysterious Organization) possess. Yoki is also possessed by a group of carnivorous demons called "yokai", with the Claymores being human females that are trained and turned into half-yokai hybrids in order to fight them. The Claymores are all ranked from 1 to 47, with 1 being the strongest and 47 being the weakest. Usually, this ranking is based solely upon the amount of yoki the individual possesses (Clare, the protagonist is only one-quarter yokai and is ranked at 47). Further, only use a small portion of their yoki at any given time, but can tap into more of it at the risk of permanently transforming to beasts known as Awakened Beings.

- Haiyore! Nyaruko-san, a series of light novels by Manta Aisora (later adapted into several anime), contains a joking reference to Dragon Ball when the title character Nyaruko (AKA Nyarlathotep) says that she has a fighting power of 530,000 (equivalent to Frieza's first form), which makes her one of the strongest fighters on Earth; she also mentions that a farmer with a hunting rifle has a power of 5.

- Toriko uses a Capture level system, which is used to determine the strength of the creatures living in the Gourmet World. It is highly similar to Dragon Ball Z, in that the strength of the creatures encountered as the series progresses increases exponentially. The first measured Capture Level was that of a Garara Gator, which has a Capture Level of 8.

- World Trigger is a manga series by Daisuke Ashihara. Trion, an energy created by an organ next to the heart, is used to power Triggers, powerful weapons that are used against the main antagonists, Neighbors. While most Triggers are white, a black Trigger can be created using the life force of a person. Black triggers are more powerful than white Triggers. Additionally, when one has a high level of trion, an extrasensory perception arises. For example, Yūma Kuga's side effect is that he can detect lies.

- The Seven Deadly Sins, a manga series by Nakaba Suzuki uses Balor's Power Eye that determines the a power level of the characters that represents their pure fighting prowess presented as numerical values and is the sum of three different values: magic, strength and spirit. It is to be noted however that Power Levels in the series are nothing more than rough estimates of one's overall capabilities and, at best, should be use for nothing more than reference. Their values can change, mainly based on the situation at hand, compatibility between powers as well as each individual's physical and mental condition and overall skill.

---

Even years after it's end, DB is still best selling manga.
