How come Uchiha and Senju didn't know how the war started?

I never understood this, the kid Senju and Madara figured war was pointless how come the adults Senju and Uchiha didn't figure out war was pointless?

I mean Hashirama call out the Senju was no better than the Uchiha since they are doing war, Madara was thinking the same until the adult interfered.

I wonder why they didn't figure someone was manipulating them.

Well there were probably actual things being fought over like territory; the clan system predated the village system, so land was always being contested. Senju and Uchiha just don't know what the initial conflict was that put them at odds over land.
