How come Itatchi could break free of the Edo, but Madara cant? Isnt Madara like the #1 Uchiha?

Because Itachi was able to use Kotoamatsukami in order to override Kabuto's Edo Tensei control. Wasn't really Itachi's doing, if Madara had access to Shisui's eye then he could've done the same thing (Assuming the command set in the eye was 'Protect Konoha').

Yep, I agree with you. It's because of Shisui's Genjutsu that Itachi could break free, not because of Itachi himself. Hell, if there was an Edo Ramen Guy and if he got put under KA, he would also break free of Edo. =D

Kotoamatsukami really rocks,but poor Madara was kinda on the other side of the battlefield AND it had long since been used once Madara actualy showed up. There are several chapters in between Itachi and Nagato meeting up with Naruto, and Madara showing up to fight the 5 Kages.
