Boruto anime is cannon. It has been made clear. I believe the anime is currently behind for the simple fact that they know views want lots of boruto content, but don't want to wait FOREVER to get through the academy/ early/ no action phase, so they are giving us the academy development and genuine development at the same time in different medias in order to satisfy that, as well as providing obvious connections in the manga proving their connection.
They are speeding up the process of getting us to the more interesting parts by developing at a "double" pace, which usually is bad writing, but i really like the way it is currently happening. Plus, the anime is happening fast enough that we stay entertained, with a decent quality budget for animation, and since it is starting in the past, it will be a long time before it has progressed so much that we stop getting episodes or something like that, meaning we will constantly receive good quality animated episodes every week filling in the gaps of the manga, and the manga will release monthly giving us present story material that is just as interesting because it is "current" and more powerful.
Honestly, the current set up is genius. My only concern is the plot material and character development. So far the development is perfectly fine, and in many ways, better than the original part 1, however, the story content for the academy arc/ genuine arc lacks a certain vibe that the original had, and it definitely needs it back. However, i think kara is gonna give that to us, so lets be patient. The story is still very early manga wise, so to judge it yet for its story is rather unfair.
Its like saying naruto sucked because they weren't fighting zabuza yet and the story was boring. Well duh, nothing has happened. Kara are the ad guys, and we are slowly getting development for them.
Be honest, your only complaint with the manga is the art isn't as good as it was, and because you want weekly chapter because we are all spoiled and want more content.
