Wow thank you! How to change to an oval shape in gimp:

Get the eliptical selection you want, then, use the Script-Fu menu > Selection > Fade Outline.

Then save as a gif to get the transparency effect. You can then import into Word as a picture. Format the picture layout as tight, and then you're done.
