She is missing school to be in jail. She is on the honor roll. Who cares if she goes to school or not. The point of school is to learn and if she is learning then all is fine and well.

I know its a foreign concept to some of you but some people are capable of learning without any teachers or lectures. They just read books and use their brains. Look at Edison, he was considered too stupid to learn and he made thousands of patents that we use today.

I guess my point went right over your head. It's about the principle. The court doesn't care if she can learn without going to school. It's about the honor and respect. Why do lawyers wear suits while just sitting in their offices? Because it's the principle of it. They could come in wearing boxers and a visor hat and do the same work, but they don't because that's not what you do.

Whaaaaa-? How many times did she not go to school for? I might have read it wrong sorry but putting someone in jail for not attending school wouldn't help her education or attendance. It's not exactly breaking the law, is it, missing a couple of days? Is she not studying at home or at least attempting some work there? Wait, she has a job as well. Does she need further education? Does she have a reason to not go into school? Oh... she's only 17... >< Sorry.. But I don't think it's right to put someone in prison for this.

She has two jobs and is an honors student. She really is smart but she missed many days because of her jobs.
It's not fair because the highschool i go to many student miss many days of school. They don't want to learn or anything. Even if they come to school they make trouble.

Well that principle is ****ing pointless and useless principle. Who cares about attendance. The main purpose of going to school is to learn. If someone can do that without ever setting foot in a classroom, I say let him/her be.

Why learn when you can just steal to make money? Or defraud the government? Or just murder people and take their money? It's the law. Nobody cares if you think it's right or wrong, it's never going to change.

Why should we care about the principal? The principal you are talking about has no benefits and is merely hurting this student... Infact allowing kids to skip school if they have very good grades would encourage kids to learn and learn quicker. There is nothing about honor or respect in there, where do you get this from?

Lawyers do that because a client could walk in at any time and if they were in their boxers people would find another lawyer..... or he gets sued for sexual harassment

"A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car; but if he has a university education he may steal the whole railroad." - Teddy Roosevelt

The government defrauds almost everyone and the reason we cannot is because they have the military force to stop us. Also the govt's money is also our money.... So in effect we would be stealing from ourselves <_<;;

You are unfairly taking something away from someone without due compensation... Life cannot be calculated so it cannot equal anything

In NAZI germany killing Jews was the law? Should we still abide by it despite it being wrong?

So you would be happy with an anarchy then. That's about the sum of what you're getting at. I'm not even going to comment on how you misinterpreted that quote. So 10 or 20 people in history were smart enough not to need school and became famous for it, big deal. You know what happens when school isn't required and people are just supposed to figure out their own education themselves? Russia. Russia happens.

You seem to me like you would be rallying for legalization of marijuana too... ;)

Nah I don't like Anarchy. You can have it I am not interested.

not 10 or 20 more like tens of millions. Before there were schools you either learned yourself, learned via apprenticeship, or were an aristocrat. Not many learned by themselves but the ones that did survived quite well. Some even became famous. Many intelligent people don't become famous. Look at Tesla he was known as a madman in his time and now he is a celebrity among certain groups You need to educate yourself a little.

What is wrong with Russia? They are doing fine now.

I am for legalizing pot since both alcohol and cigarettes are more dangerous than pot

Why are people going OTT, she was only in jail for 24 hours, nothing major. Yeah it was unfair but it's not like she had a serious punishment or anything.

Well talk about missing the mark there. Stealing from people or murdering infringes on other people's rights and hurts them. Whose rights is she infringing on when she decided not to go to school? Who did she hurt?
Not every law or principle is good for society. Infact there're some that hold society back. As a matter of fact over here in the U.K, school is only compulsory till you're 16 years of age. After that its upto you. In my opinion a long as it doesnt affect the student's grades, she should be allowed to skip as many classes as she wants. School is afterall an institution for learning. If someone can learn without classes, I say let him/her.

That is something on her record that she may never be able to shake off. I don't think anyone would want to go to prison for something like that especially given what she herself has gone through.

She's 17, it'll be off of her record and cannot affect her after she turns 18

OT: I really feel bad for this girl, but I feel that this is one of those rare exceptions. In my area, politicians can't figure out how to deal with quite a few thousand students who are consistently truant and don't graduate from high school. Although putting a kid in jail often doesn't fix something, there really seems like no other option to do normally. We need real solutions for problems like truancy instead of just "throwing kids into jail" like every other common criminal

... If they are skipping school and doing badly in school hows about putting them to work. I hear things need fixing and cleaning around cities.

Some people just aren't meant for school and should try to find an apprenticeship somewhere. They do not want to learn things they might/probably will never need or use.

Yah they work alright, they often work on the streets robbing people and selling drugs. It's much quicker and easier to do, and you make a lot more money

But I do agree with putting kids in apprenticeships more so that they can have a good skill to get a good job. Apprenticeships are too often looked down upon when they are some of the most important jobs that we need as a society

It depends on what classes she was taking and the quality of her work. Was this college or high school?

If the law said to kill every black person you meet would you? Hitler tried it with Jews. So if you were in Germany back in 1938 you would have rounded up and killed Jews just because "the law is the law"

Highschool. College you don't have to show up a day besides the exam and you can pass most of your classes.
