As a trucker I get approached frequently by people while parked 9-10 they ask for money cuz they're out of gas have kids in the car etc.. I offered once to put $20 gas in car for lady she got pissed when I wouldn't just give her the money.. most of them are drug addicts drunks or con artists... there's a lady in laredo tx that begs at an exit ramp off I 35 looks pathetic dirty and sick.... locals told me she drives a lexus has a nice house with a pool not far from where she sits and makes $3-$400 a day from suckers... sadly most of the ones you see holding signs are just like her.....

little story: When my parents first moved to Holland, they were fairly.. poor. However, they took in a homeless, drug addict. In their own home.. when I was about 2 years old, I guess. That homeless drug addict got a job, a wife, 2 beautiful and succesfull daughters, and died a year ago leaving his family behind.

It's often the poor that are the most generous because they lived through the same harshness of life. Nowadays, my parents are doing well financially though

<div class="bbWrapper">I don't come across too many homeless people around here, but the few times I have seen any I always give them some money and talk to them just a little bit. What I'd really like to do is give em my leftovers, they always go to waste and I hate wasting food. Especially when I take the time to cook it. Yeah you can find me in the kitchen for sure, lol!</div>

I guess it's because we both have parents who come from nothing, why we're more compassionate with the homeless.

I am forced to ignore them, where I come from they pop up from every corner of the street, especially in the big cities. If you don't ignore them you'll end up being busy all day talking to them and giving out your properties. In the worst of cases you end up with nothing on you when you get back home, that is IF you get back home. Sometimes they come knocking at the door asking for a meal, and we gladly do so everyday. There's this one guy who comes around every single day asking for a piece of bread and he says that that is all he eats in a day, and in the case there're any leftovers left we gladly hand them to him.

When I was much younger there was this one old guy who always came in to visit us and walk around the house (we have a huge house) for the most part of the afternoon but then left again. Sometimes he stayed over for dinner. He never stole anything from us, he just came in there to have people to talk to.

So yeah, I'm pretty much used to it, but since I'm currently living in a wealthy country you don't see that many of them around, but when I do I try not to give them money, but instead food or something to drink.

cant say ive ever come close to a coherent conversation with a hobo. most i encounter seem to be starting off into the distance or just rapidly looking around while muttering something that i either cant understand or just sounds legitimately crazy. or they just keep their heads down while pushing a grocery kart.

Well, I've never encountered a homeless person who really talked to me or anything. Usually they're just like "hey got some money?" and if you don't they walk of cursing and if you do they just take it and go. If they wanted to talk I'd listen because I feel bad, but the ones around here aren't like that.

I heard that there is such a thing as Hobo Appreciation Day but I'm not sure if that is real or not.

I ignore everyone I see... but whenever I see poor people out on the street and they are asking for money I will try to give them whatever money I have on me and hope they spend it wisely.

Back when I was in New York last summer, I bought a homeless guy some white castle.
I didn't really engage them in conversation.
I just don't think it's right for me to let him starve.
