Holocaust denial?

Recently in my human rights class we began discussing the Holocaust and how it was a violation of Human Rights. Well long story short, I read articles and heard about how people deny the Holocaust ever happened......

Honestly, this was somewhat sickening to hear.

I know there were people who denied it, but I thought it was somewhat of a joke and never actually heard their reasoning before, or even knew people literally have clubs similar to the KKK that deny the fact that the Holocaust ever happened or may not have been as bad as historians make it out to be.


The thing that I find funny is that the most common reasoning I gathered from them was that the Holocaust just seemed too implausible to have that many casualties and that much brutality.

But this is an event that happened within the last century with diaries, letters, reports, records, and there are people who are still alive to this day who have witnessed the horrors, not only jews, but war veterans, civilians, etc.

and if they think the Holocaust never happened because of how unreal it sounds, they how can they believe in everything else that happened in history such as Genghis Khans dominance over half the known world?

yeah there have been worse; Mao Zedong's establishment of the People's Republic lead to the starvation of over 30million Chinese.....the number is said to be grossly underestimated.

but nonetheless, denying such catastrophes because a few people lied about it doesn't justify the reasoning.

It's not really that surprising or even odd for that matter. If the human race was truly so rational as we think it is, then there shouldn't be so many ideological, religious or just plainly violent conflicts. There are also people who still deny the moonlanding and countless of other stuff.

You also need to realize that the Holocaust became a hot topic only relatively recent. There was some commotion around it just after WW II during the liberation of the camps and at the processes of Nuremberg, however after that it was pretty much for 40 years collectively ignored. Not really denied, they just ignored it, it was a topic that would simply not be discussed as it was far too dangerous and delicate to discuss a matter like that smack dab in the middle of the Cold War. It's only after the fall of the Soviet Union that the Holocaust got thoroughly researched and all these diaries, records and documents became (re)discovered and widespread. Before that, if there was already something published like a diary, it often got pushed towards the margins of society.

So people have collectively ignored the Holocaust for a large part of their lives and then suddenly they are being slapped by it non-stop in the face. It's not hard to imagine that some of them intentionally try to deny it, especially when you need to take into consideration the paranoia that lived in the minds of people, both in the communistic as capitalistic countries. Yews have been blamed for countless of disasters the last 1500 years and/or just used as scapegoats. So for the older generations it's indeed not hard to imagine that they are considering this just 'yet again a Yew conspiracy'.

For the younger generations it becomes far harder to believe such stuff, especially as a result of the mass media and high-speed traffic of information, which makes such conspiracies almost impossible to collectively believe. Even America can't even keep complete control anymore over all the stuff they do (NSA scandal, Wikileaks etc.), however during the Cold War all of that was very different. The amount of stuff both the USA and SU have been doing were more than once on the borderline of being absurd and completely mental. So that people, after all that, are doubting these records about the Holocaust and deny it, isn't that weird, especially considering on the large scale the Holocaust happened. If it was not directly, without a doubt many people helped indirectly with it. I think many of them don't want to be remembered about that.

Then you also have the people who will just plainly deny it because it doesn't suit their purposes, same way how there are some American politicians that say you can't get pregnant when raped just to counter one of the most important arguments against abortion. If people make stuff up, it's also easy to deny existing stuff.

You want something that is hard to believe? Try googleing list of people with the most children.(the top that 1 guy was said to have had is about 800, and the top 1 gal has had is about 70).(my class had a debate about this one time(high school class). and then people looked it up)


But in all honesty though an event as tragic, and brutal, as the holocaust, deserves at the very least acknowledgement that it did exist.
