...Huh?! All anyone ever did was suck Sasuke's you know what. Is this a retcon? Or was it the kids who embraced Sasuke but the adults shunned him?

Of course he was... The Uchiha were accused of attacking the village with the Kyuubi. People thought the Uchiha were a threat, that's what made Fugaku decide to make plans for a coup, because the village were treating his people like garbage.

To be honest, I never had the impression that Sasuke was being ostracized back when I watched p1. I'd say it's a retcon that takes its beginning approximately at chapter 500 of the manga, just not a recent one.

That's the Anime, I think they were more dramatic about it.

So, might it have just been the adults then? Because all anyone ever did with Sasuke was have high expectations of him. In fact, I'd say he was treated more like a zoo animal with ppl looking at him and expecting all these great things of him bc he was an Uchiha....like, he was not an individual....but ostracised? I just don't see it....though, now that I think about it, he became uncoorperative at school after the massacre, so I can see him getting scolded for certain things, but treated like an outcast? Nah son.....we saw the complete opposite in part 1.....and now that I think about it, the kids adapted their parent's attitudes toward Naruto so it stands to reason that they would've adapted their attitudes toward Sasuke too...so that indicates to me that the parents didn't harbor any resentment toward Sasuke. This is a retcon through and through.

Exactly. No way to spin it.

It's kind of a respect/fear kind of thing where the village was concerned. They recognize that the Uchiha were powerful and feared it at the same time. Which is why everyone had high exectations of Sasuke.

They also had some small sympathy for him being the last of his clan. Which is why he wasn't ostracized.

Ostracized would be wrong i guess.......I mean Naruto was treated with outright disgust while Sasuke's treatment i guess was akin to a rare specie animal sort. Not neglected but rather i guess people might have been a bit cautious, reserved......the treatment was very different as opposed to the facts the condition that they were both orphans was the same

If Sasuke was ostracized what word would we have to use for Naruto then?

In a way the were treated the same. You have two children with no family at all and they let them be all by themselves. The only one in the village that truly cared for both of them was the third hokage. Naruto also eventually got close to Iruka. However, it doesn't change the fact that everyone else in the village really didn't care about them.

Also, they were treated the same but at different sides of the spectrum. Naruto was hated for bearing the kyubbi which killed a lot of villagers. Sasuke clan was believed to be the cause of the kyubbi attack. However, since he was an uchiha people wanted to see just how strong he was. Sasuke wasn't seen as a suffering kid, but more so he was seen as fighter. No one truly had interest in sasuke all they had interest in was his ability. Had knowledge people known who naruto's father was he would have been in the same boat as sasuke.

Naruto was ostracized by the village because of the kyubbi, while sasuke ostracized himself from the village because all the villagers cared about was his ability. Both faced the same problem just in different ways.

yes, that felt off as well and contrary too what we saw. maybe the line was meant to be "we were alone and both treated differently" or something along that

The Uchiha were certainly treated differently to a certain extent.

Orochimaru clearly states that the Uchiha being the Police force caused them to be hated.

As well, they were sent to a corner of the village by Tobirama. I'm sure he wasn't the only one who thought that way, especially since there were "rumors" of the Uchiha, which he told Hashirama about.

Other than that I have no idea tho.

For a brief period after death of Minato under mysterious Kyuubi attack- mysterious since they suspected an Uchiha behind the incident but couldn't prove it and Uchiha were too prideful to talk it out- yes manga says there was a feeling of hostility. That comes as justification of coup.

But then Itachi and massacre happened making Sasuke the sole Uchiha kid in the village. Because of the tragedy people felt differently about Sasuke himself and came to sympathies with him as he too had lost family and his own brother was the accused. Uchiha tragedy became the new point of argument and case of Minato's death became old headline.

Not really that complicated.
