Imo Hiruzen is the greatest hokage because the manga says so and as a geezer he held off kurama and took on hashi tobirama and oro at the same time and ended the fight in a draw
Danzo. Without him, Konoha would've fallen apart. He's also my third favorite character.
But he was unofficial, so my favorite official would be Hashirama for co-founding the village, fighting Madara, and ARGUABLY being the strongest Hokage.
^Danzo is definitely up there with my favorite characters. I love the way the anime put together the little childhood scene of Danzo with Hiruzen as he was dying. He never could catch up to his idol, but he wasn't given the credit he deserves. He was in the backlines taking care of Konoha, given no recognition whatsoever, a brilliant character by kishi :')
Haha fanboy goin hard![]()

He really isn't danzo became one of the most emotional for me too, i mean, at first, like more people i hated him too, especially when he killed the messenger frog, i was like... forget you old man, and at the kage summit, cause he was making konoha look, bad, but after his back story.. i just felt kinda bad for him.. never been able to match hiruzen no matter how hard he tried, in the end... he was just a massive konoha loyalist, and ain't nothing wrong with that

Totally agree. I'm glad to see you don't despise Danzo for irrational reasons like some others on here.I love the idea of his character as well. That little question over Danzo Kishi put in during his fight with Sasuke was great. "A greedy dictator, or the noble personification of shinobi?" I think that was the whole base behind his entire character.
Hashirama's death is still shrouded in mystery as of now.
Tobirama, while not as "flashy" as some of the other Hokages' sacrifices, gave rise to Hiruzen and Danzo (arguably 2 future Hokages). As kin to Hashirama, this definitely showed his belief in the next generation.
Hiruzen was killed off indirectly by Orochimaru. His sacrifice was noble indeed, and until the very end he preached of Konoha's people and the Will of Fire that they all held. It probably saved the entire Leaf Village.
Minato was a legend by all standards. Personally, his death sparks the most emotion. He defeated Tobi, and made the hard decision of making his own son the Jin. of the Kyuubi. The embodiment of Jiraiya's goal, Naruto is further persuaded by Minato to complete his goal of finding true peace.
Danzo was a pretty unique Hokage. It's like he ditched the whole morality issue and decided to stem towards realism instead. Although he's viewed as a villain by many, Danzo did indeed care for the village until the very end. Remember that the village was at its prime when Hiruzen was Hokage and Danzo worked in the shadows (at least by the elder's standards).
Although he isn't my fav, I would have to mention Tobirama.
He's so underrated, it's rediculous.
^I have a feeling kishi is going to make a gaiden specifally for him and will make him a total badass!! He had the title for more reason that just his brother. He also looks like the most unique Hokage.
IMO Danzo is one of the more interesting characters of Naruto. The whole good vs. evil seems to be stale in my eyes; the true conflict seems to be morality vs. realism. This is true for real life AND in manga such as Naruto. There is no visible "right" path for many people when this issue is brought up.
