Hokage Heirs

Has anyone else noticed that all of the current 5 kages have no heirs? Gaara is still young but besides that this is the most heirless generation of kages to even exist. While we know that the 3rd raikage, and the 3rd hokage, as well as the fourth kazekage, third hokage and 1st hokage had wives and children, they are rarely, if ever depicted. Asuma obviously had a mother, but she has never ever, been mentioned or had any significance in the plot. So subsequently we have never seen what a wife of a hokage's roll would have been like, especially if they were also a ninja, would they have their own title and rank? Would they just be regular ninja, or simply relieved of fighting duty? And as far as heirs, even though they don't necessarily become hokage, they tend to be strong, and the majority of known heirs became so. It just seems weird to me that kishi has them all like this, even though 4 out of the 5 are past maturity. Also besides tsunade, none of them have any apprentice to train to continue in their style of fighting, or legacy. Even though kakashi says that the previous generation will always be surpassed by the next, it seems like the next are thin in number and weaker than before...

We say Hiruzen's wife she died in the 9 Tails attack. But to your main point, thus current generation of ninja seems to be rather weak with only a very few exceptions.
