Was Itachi simply nothing to him? Was he worthless? Lord Hiruzen seemed to think so.

He was perhaps just so far above Itachi that he simply couldn't relate to the kid anymore(kinda like how we are indifferent to the suffering of ants),

Hiruzen has shown plenty of times in the series (and even in front of Sasuke as an Edo), that he cared for Itachi. Hiruzen is not indifferent to Itachi.
He cared (probably felt guilty too).

yes i agree.. rinnegan, forehead puzzle and omyodon would have been too easy for lord hiruzen... the only way kishi could think of that would kill him was boring him to death by old age.. the reaper death seal, which takes you to walhalla where you will have 50 virgins, was the only way out for our lord.
