You have to ask yourself: why is Hiruzen still here? Why is he not fodderised by Madara like the other Kage? Simple; because if Rikodu Madara or Sage Madara fought Hiruzen they would've lost, plain and simple; hence why Madara needs to get his other eye before he's ready to tackle Hiruzen.

Considering Hiruzens been around for like a hundred years and Hashirama's strentgh is an unbelievable "fairytale". Of course he got the title. He was more realistic in those ninjas eyes.

OK, but you have to understand that it does no make Hurizen stronger than Madara. Just because Hurizen was consider stronger than the Hokage does not mean he could defeat Madara from the past. Hashirama is known to only defeat Madara in the past. That Logic does not necessarily work like that. Example, Hurizen could defeat Hashirama and Hashirama could defeat Madara, therefore, Hurizen could defeat Madara.
