Regardless of whether he had the courage, the reasoning or the mental capacity to take action in an appropriate manner, Hiruzen could have saved his village and a number of people a lot of pain and suffering if he, as the Hokage, had done any of the following:

1. Number one on this list is Orochimaru(obviously). One of the most famous moments from part 1 Naruto, the moment Hiruzen stood by and let Orochimaru run free when he could have easily ended his life in a flash. Later on down the road, too old to even sustain shadow clones, Hiruzen paid the ultimate price for his mistake. He tried to mend things as best he could but what good did that do?
Orochimaru got away with mass murder but not only that, he reached scary levels of power and became an active threat to Konoha. Not to mention the curse mark that swayed Sasuke over to the Dark side of the force was also a result of this foolishness.

2. Danzo. Nuff said. This is the same scenario as Oro, only on a much......much higher scale. This dude was partly(and in some cases fully) responsible for a lot of bad sh*t, and I mean a lot! But you guys don't need a history lesson. He is the guy who had access to a lot of power in Konoha(thanks to Hiruzen's sound judgement(sarcasm) and ignorance.
Orochimaru has Danzo's resources and encouragement to thank for his breakthrough in the real world application of Hashirama's cells in various forms. We all know where that led us.......(Mokuton Sage Madara)...........but that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Danzo's misdeeds.
Another person who Hiruzen, as Hokage, could have put a permanent stop to, but for some ridiculous reason( I believe it was ignorance), he just let Danzo do as he pleased.

3. Uchiha massacre. Another topic that needs no explanation. This happened due to a combination of Hiruzen's failed governing and Danzo's orchestration. An entire clan was slaughtered within the boundaries of Konoha over night people. Need I say more?
4. This one is for you. I believe I've covered all his major blunders so feel free to list something that needs to be mentioned.
Before I end this thread I just want to say this as an early response to the posts I know will be here soon enough.
I love Hiruzen. I cried when he sacrificed his life and cheered when beat Oro's ass down along with his Hokage summons all those years ago. I was psyched when he himself returned as an Edo Tensei. He remains one of my fav characters from this manga.
But I don't let my feelings obstruct facts. These things happened and Hiruzen was responsible for them as Hokage. I don't know why I made this thread, just felt like someone who wasn't a Sandaime hater had to come out and say this to make it clear. Anyway.......yeah......
