Howdy, this is my first post (OP) so please don't hate me. Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu.

I'm American (nobody is perfect) and currently taking Japanese 101. The class is going well, we started with Hiragana and are now learning Katagana. I've noticed Japanese people love to mix their writing systems into one sentence and it's not a problem (to them). I'm planning on using Naruto to learn faster, so if I'm learning Kanji on top of everything else it gets cumbersome.

(!)
My Question: Does anybody know where/ if I can find scans written only in Hiragana? Or at least in Katagana/ Hiragana so I'm not lost with the Kanji? Suck it up and learn the Kanji as I go?

Thanks.

First of all, you're learning KATAKANA カタカナ, かたかな.

As you, probably, already know, Japanese writing system consists of three main scripts: hiragana, kanji and katakana. Almost all Japanese sentences contain both kanji and hiragana (while some also use katakana- for foreign words, names etc.).
Now, hiragana characters are used to write okurigana (inflectional endings), joshi (grammatical particles) and furigana (phonetic characters of kanji placed beside the kanji to help children or nonnative speakers or clarify meaning of the kanji).
Original Naruto manga is written using furigana with kanji so you can practice on it.

So, to read manga without knowing kanji is possible if you have good, clear scans but that's a little bit hard to find on the internet.
However, you can try to read it here . These are not the best scans but I think that you can menage to read it.

Lady Mokusei-sama,

Hajime Mashite! Your response not only gave me a proper link, your explanation of the writing systems is extremely insightful.

I JUST discovered furigana this week (and then you explained it here), so the fact that Naruto is written in a way that will help me learn Kanji... let's just say I won't be short of reading material this winter!

Thank you for taking the time to inform myself and others. I wish I had a special skill, trade, or talent to offer in return, but all I can extend is my sincere gratitude. If I come across clearer scans in the future I will share the link with you via private message. Thank you again!

Gambarimasu!
