Hinata: What makes her a Mary Sue

A "Mary Sue" (or "Gary Stu" for males) is a character who is overly perfect. Usually found in fan-fiction, these characters are nearly invincible, multi talented to the extreme, and loved by everyone except the readers. Often, Mary Sue represents the author's idealized version of him- or herself projected into the world of the original fiction, also known as canon. The readers can easily detect this fact.
Mary Sues are constantly winning the love of a character the author really likes or fixing up two previously unattached characters the author thinks should be together.
Mary Sues aren't limited to fan-fiction. Mary Sues can be found in totally original works as well.
The inability to do something that has no influence on the character's day-to-day life or the important things she does is not a flaw. A star ship pilot who can't sing very well is still a perfectly good star ship pilot. A member of a family of traveling minstrels who can't sing very well has a real problem.

For a time now I realize Hinata is a Mary Sue. I'm not doing this to bash but the reason everyone likes her is because they KNOW she's perfect and they admit it. So I'll prove some points to why.

• Regardless from being removed the next Head of the Hyuga, Hinata is still apart of a good family and a powerful clan
• Hinata was only shy around Naruto
• Although lost fights we've seen her in, she is still able to fight
• She doesn't need to be loved back by Naruto.
• Not physically affected by the injuries Neji did in Pt1. If it were like this then Hinata would have a flaw

THERE are more I know but these are just the top 5 I picked. Do you agree or disagree? Please post!

You've got balls to state the obvious about Hinata. But yeah, she's horridly written. We know nothing about her other then her obsession for Naruto, and that she could be the next in line to lead a famous clan. So interesting... >.>

Her character's number one flaw is how devoted she is to Naruto.

But she still cracks my list of top sues

1. Minato
2. Hinata
3. Itachi

Prety sue-ish characters all of them. I know the guy's are gary stus or something, but screw it.

I can respect your opinion.....but I would have found her being kicked out as a heiress to kind of be a flaw. That one feels like knit-picking to say that despite being a failure in her clan she's part of a powerful clan....I mean you could say the same for Sasuke, Naruto, or even Choji (if you count Naruto and Sasuke's families for their old clans).

On top of that I would say the fact she was basically stomped on in all of her fights detracts from a flawless person. While yes her chest would seems to be gone, it still aflicted her during the Chunin exam finals. It also could have still aflicted her but because she wasn't a main character....it was never shown....it did have two years to heal (not to mention Tsunade being present who could fix broken backs).

Also her back story of constantly failing doesn't exactly follow one that is flawless.

I would say she can appear Mary Sue like because she strives to be more than a failure, and I would say her recent stance that has taken her shyness away would deffinatly be the closest to Mary Sue she's been; however, I just don't see her as a flawless character.



Were she a Mary Sue she would:

Have excelled in her Clan. Had a normal background. Would not be super shy around Naruto. Most likely would have won her fight with Neji.

I guess I can see where you're coming from, but I just view it differently (but I guess that's how life works lol).

As when I think of what your deffinition of Mary Sue is, it would be someone who comes off as perfect in every way. For example up until the fight on the bridge, Part I Sasuke was perfect at practically everything shinobi like. Same for Kakashi just before Zabuza got him.

Until his fight with Sasuke, Gaara was pretty perfect as well. And Obito as Tobi was flawless until Konan.

But if a person was apart from a family of singers and can't sing is a flaw. You see what I mean? Hinata isn't the heiress anymore but that doesn't mean she's not a bad Hyuga. If she didn't have a byakugan, that would be a flaw.
Since Hinata is a side-character we only seen a few of her fights. And those fights we've seen her lose. It's not like I think she has never won a fight. Just we don't see that.

I see what you mean! I guess I would still see it a flaw if you can't sing well from a family of singers (under the assumption it is a family of good singers). And I wasn't questioning whether or not she's won fights, but rather commenting that she actually lost fights where a Mary Sue perfect character would normally win every fight (my interpretation of course) until being taken down by the Main Character or something.

One out of four. No Mary Sue here. Itachi has at least 2 and 3. I'd say Minato is a Mary Sue.

This is a flaw, the fact that she is only being revolved around Naruto is a flaw itself, I do not want to be stereotypical but she is being considered as "perfect" because she only revolving around the guy he loves and her shyness and boobs found appealing by some.

I mean there is more to her than just that...but sadly there are many who see just that from her.

As for the love thing....I'd say that's more of a consequence of being a secondary character....having no screen time unless she's around Naruto makes us only see her when she is around him...which at that point would make sense for her to think about him xd!
