First few paragraphs are not that important, read it if only you have enough free time.
As some people here who don't watch anime and fillers, they tend to refuse to believe that those are part of the story somehow, and doesn't change the story of the main manga, rather gives a side story to lengthen up the anime series, but it even if not written by Kishimoto, it is probably approved by him to be written just so the anime filler writers won't lead the story somewhere else.
Now to begin with the things that occurred in the Anime.
After Hinata expressed her love or whatever to Naruto in episode 166 of Naruto Shippuden, Naruto never reacted to it, more so on, when he came back after confronting Pein, he was hugged by Sakura. Later wards it was shown that Sasuke almost killed Sakura when she tried to kill Sasuke, only for Naruto to save her. It was simply because they wanted to show how Sakura is going to stop loving Sasuke.
After that Naruto is sent with Gai Sensei, Yamato and that other ninja to Paradise Island, but before reaching that island, in the filler episode 235 of Naruto Shippuden, Naruto meets The Kunoichi of Nadeshiko Village and tells her how he loves Sakura still, and will forever love her and will try hard to earn her admiration. Note : *Hinata had no contact with Naruto during that whole while
Then Naruto safely reaches the Paradise Island and begins his training to overcome 9tails where he meets his mom. It wasn't long while when Naruto confessed her love for Sakura to the Kunoichi of Nadeshiko Village, Naruto's mom told Naruto to find a girl like her mom to marry. (Only Sakura haters would say that Sakura is not like Kushina)
Also note : Naruto anime movies are also part of fillers, now guess, who wrote the story of Naruto Movie - Road to Ninja? Kishimoto. In which no one but Naruto and Sakura were shown spending time with each other and understanding each other's feelings
Now coming towards Hinata
The only time she once confessed herself to Naruto, she was ignored and rejected.
What part did she ever played apart from jumping infront of jutsu that were going to hit Naruto? Would those be enough to make Naruto love her? Without any understanding between them? No.
Yes, she does love Naruto, but she doesn't have any understanding between them, like Naruto and Sakura have, as they have both spent so much time together doing all the missions together. So those who are watching Anime series, they wouldn't accept Hinata as the heroine.
Moreover, recently some scenes have occurred in the manga, showing how Hinata loves Naruto much, like protecting him which led to Neji's death, but that is just because before Hinata would die, they want to show how Hinata loved Naruto. To bring some sad end to the story.
I mean, come on, how come Naruto who tells Kunoichi of Nadeshiko Village that he loves Sakura, then listens to what his mom says, suddenly he goes to the battle field and holds Hinata's hand, that doesn't make sense, that would only make Naruto look like an immature character, who talks different, does things different.
Hinata is likely to die in the war saving Naruto for the last time and her last words would be : "Naruto, i always loved you, but you never noticed it, i know you love Sakura chan, i'm going to die, but i want you to go to Sakura chan and tell her that you love her ... *khokhokho cough cough die*"
General law of love : If you love someone, you won't force it on someone, but you'd be ready to give your life away for them and be a forever silent lover
In any circumstances, Naruto anime would follow the same path as Naruto manga, it is Naruto not full metal alchemist.
So, Hinata may possibly die and would lead to NaruSaku.
