Well natsus magic power increases as he feel strong emotions(flames of emotion) correct me if I'm wrong so probably seeing gray "die" triggered a very strong emotion which is so his magic power must have increased drastically and dragon slayers enter dragonforce when they obtain a high amount of magic power again correct me if I'm wrong about anything I think that's what happened tho.
