theory and this thread goes a little detail into somethings to solidify that theory.

I think the main and side branches of hyuga came as a direct consequence to the hyuga humping an uzumaki.
I also think just like how hyugas seal is like a bird in a cage and how uzumaki are sealing experts, i think the stages of the sharingan is like a seal every uchiha are born with that locks away their true eye-power and have to go through pain in order to unlock it.
Hasn´t it occured to you that the sharingan is like a seal, when you get the mangekyou, the veins resemble you having broke free or something.

Also, i think since the rinnegan has the color that most resembles the byakugan, the uzumakis trademark red-hair became the red color of the sharingan.
The uzumakis ability to seal was with every uchiha at birth as they all start out with their true power sealed.
I don´t think the sage had this problem especially since he had both the body and the eyes.
I think he reached all the stages of the sharingan to the rinnegan without side-effect or requirements but through training only.

This is very intriguing, It's very possible and if you think about it the red hair plus blue byakugan makes purple rinnegan. Simple color mixtures, if you'd like to break it down that simple. I'm hoping neji and hinata receive a nice eye power upgrade to further this idea.

I don´t think neji and hinata will get a byakugan powerup or if they do, it would be cool but it wouldn´t be as interesting at this point in the series, kishi went through the whole war without paying attention to the side-characters, i thought it would be their time to shine but instead naruto became the superman of the war and then the kages, sasuke and the usual stuff.
